Frack Site – Fire Risk

Today’s oil and gas well fracking business has become of major importance to our countries ability to be and stay independent. The renewed reserves this process brings to market will help sustain oil and gas prices at levels not thought possible just a few years back. Fracking is not an option but a must for America and the oil and gas industry.

Keeping these well site safe during the fracking process is first in our minds. From the first shovel into the ground until the grass is replanted, safety on site is everyone’s responsibility. It is understood that oil & gas operations always carry the risk of fire, fracking operations are no exception. High pressure hose lines, hot diesel engines, lots of fuel all sitting in a very compact space. A fire event in this operation can be catastrophic as has been witnessed.

History of fires at frack sites tells us that fire when it does happen can and will travel quickly through the entire site. Most fires have resulted in destruction and total loss of all the equipment. This is mostly due to the close proximity of the equipment. Adding to the challenge is the fact that many of the well sites are in locations far from fire stations. The response time for local fire departments to give aid is long. Often when they do arrive, they are not equipped to deal with the scale of such an event. Their foam supplies are not large enough to deliver the foam application needed to fight such a fire.

For all these reasons prior planning and training of operators is essential. Having the right firefighting equipment and the skilled personal on site that can deliver the correct response to fire can and will make the difference between a save and loss. With life safety and tens of millions worth of equipment on the line it is best practice to have a solid plan in place before disaster strikes.

POTENTIAL FRACK SITE FIRE RISK

  • Diesel pump engine fires
  • Truck engine fires
  • Pool & spill fires from broken hose lines
  • Spray fires resulting from split hose lines or flange gasket failure
  • Blowback from the wellhead
  • Lighting strikes

SOLUTIONS

The solution to reduce fire risk on frack sites is to have in place a fire response plan. This plan should include both firefighting and fire suppression system and equipment that are designed for the application. The following are suggested equipment and systems that will greatly reduce the risk of fire destroying a frack site.

Engine Fire:

  • Automatic CAF/ MIST foam fire suppression systems

Pool & Spill Fires:

  • Automatic CAF foam fire suppression systems (under frack Pump Trailers)
  • BOSS 60 Handheld CAF Firefighting Skids Dual Agent CAF/Dry Chem Skids
  • Dual Agent CAF/Dry Chem Skids

Spray Fires Wellhead Fires:

  • Dual Agent CAF/Dry Chem Skids
In addition to having systems and equipment in place there should also be a reserve stock of firefighting foam concentrates on site ready for local fire depts.
